![]() | Success Is Spelled With 3 L'sBy Michael Jarrett When I want to know the definition of a word that relates to business, I don't pull out the old Webster’s dictionary. Sometimes I prefer to make use of my personal home employment dictionary. Just the other day I needed a little reminder on how to spell success and this is what I found. The first L in success is for listening. By listening I mean really listen to what the other person is saying to you, do not just let what they are saying pass through one ear and exit the other one. Whether the person is a professional speaker, a friend, or business associate, they are speaking for a reason. They want you to hear what they are saying! I know that seems like an obvious reason but I am still surprised at how many people say that they listened to someone talk for thirty minutes, an hour or even two hours, yet when they walk away they are unable to repeat even one sentence of what the person was talking about. Not only is it disrespectful to the person speaking, but you might have missed out on hearing something that could be vital to your success. When I listen to someone speak, especially if it is a professional speaker or business associate, I will either record what they are saying or take extensive notes. This way I am less likely to miss what may be the most important words ever spoken! Before we move on to the next L, I want to share with you one of the best motivational speakers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. His name is Nido Qubein. He is the author of many inspiring books about business and personal success and other interesting topics. If you ever get the chance to hear him speak, do not pass it up. I guarantee you will walk away from it a better person. The second L in success is for learning. Learning as much as you possibly can in your lifetime will greatly increase your chances of being successful in business as well as in your personal life. Soak up as much knowledge as you can by watching business news programs and videos, reading articles, blogs, press releases, and business magazines. In other words get your hands on every piece of information available and learn from it. Learning something new every day not only keeps your mind healthy, it may also keep you one step ahead of your competition, which increases your chance for success. The third L in success is for love. You should love the business you are involved with. If you do not love your work, if you are not passionate about what you are doing, then the chances are great that you will not give your business the devotion it needs to succeed. I firmly believe that if you do not truly care about and are not one hundred percent committed to what you are doing, then there is no reason to be doing it at all. With these things in mind, whatever home employment choice you make, be sure that you keep in mind the 3 L's in success. If you Listen, Learn, and Love success will find you.
